Key Responsibilities
- Execution of the VLU and SSL Project Safety Plans.
- Maintain the LUP Hazard Log and associated hazard management processes.
- Prepare hazard log summaries and safety engineering reports in support of Safety and Technical submissions.
- Support the LUP Safety and Technical Assurance Review (START) Process.
- Management of Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) activities.
- Integration of supplier safety engineering processes with those undertaken by the client.
- Elicitation of safety requirements and associated domain knowledge.
- Apportionment of safety requirements between suppliers.
- Liaison with key internal and external stakeholders on safety engineering matters.
- Undertake audits of supplier safety engineering activities.
- Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of BES safety engineering processes.
- Assist with the management of LUP safety engineering training and competency requirements.
- Discharge HSE responsibilities defined by the LUP HSE Management System.
- Ensure environmental issues are considered within the framework of the hazard identification and mitigation process.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Engineering qualification (degree level or equivalent) and experience.
- Detailed knowledge of product safety engineering standards (EN50128, EN50129)
- Thorough understanding of BT corporate and UK Engineering Safety Management processes and activities (eg Yellow Book, ROTS, etc).
- Experience of railway safety engineering
- Working knowledge of or experience in the use of FaultTree+ or similar proprietary FTA software

Job Summary
We are looking for experienced Safety and Reliability or System Assurance (SA) Engineers to assist us in the management of the Rail Business Unit’s projects by providing support to the Unit’s engineers and Programme Managers on SA matters. Work spans the full spectrum of System Assurance activities on projects including generation of safety cases and supporting evidence, detailed safety and reliability studies using FTA, FMECA etc. and generating and managing System Assurance plans on major projects.
Qualifications and Experience
Positions exist up to senior levels, and for the right candidate as Principal:
- Degree qualified with minimum 3 years (5 for Principal) SA experience on large projects
- Extensive knowledge and experience in the management and application of accepted safety engineering methods including Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes and effects Analysis ( FMEA), HAZOP, Engineering Safety Cases and Hazard Identification techniques.
- Experience of managing systems assurance projects from a programme and technical perspective.
- Desirable to demonstrate In depth understanding of any two of the following: Railway ESM ( Yellow Book), Cenelec 50126/8/9, EN61508, DEF STAN 0055/0056/0058 and to show experience in the use of specialist computer software such as Faultree plus, Avsim, etc
1 – RAILWAY HUMAN FACTORS ENGINEER
A human factors engineer with experience of working in the railway industry (at least 3 years), familiar with Network Rail and London Underground standards. Must hold a degree relevant to human factors and be a Register Member of the Ergonomic Society or working towards Registered Membership. This is a full-time, permanent position in Croydon, possibly working (part-time) in a project office in central London.
2 – RAILWAY EMC ENGINEER
An EMC engineer with experience of working in the railway industry, familiar with Network Rail and London Underground standards. Must hold an appropriate professional qualification or have equivalent professional experience. This is a full-time, permanent position, working full-time initially in a project office in central London.
3 – RAILWAY SAFETY ENGINEER
An engineer with a good railway background across a range of disciplines; familiar with engineering safety management principles, standards and legislation; experience of leading rail safety projects, client workshops and working within multi-disciplinary project teams. (Previous experience working in the Oil & Gas industry could be an additional advantage). This is a full-time, permanent position in Croydon, possibly working (part-time) in a project office in central London.
4 – RAILWAY SAFETY ENGINEER
An engineer with a good railway background across a range of disciplines; familiar with engineering safety management principles, standards and legislation; experience of reviewing rail safety projects undertaken by a multi-disciplinary project team. This is a full-time, permanent position, working full-time initially in a project office in central London.
5 – RAILWAY ASSURANCE ENGINEER
An engineer with a rail systems background; familiar with systems engineering/integration principles and standards; familiar with London Underground assurance/approvals principles and relevant engineering standards; experience of London Underground projects and working within multi-disciplinary project teams. This is a full-time, permanent position in Croydon, possibly working full-time initially in a project office in central London.
6 – RAILWAY SYSTEMS ENGINEER
An engineer with a rail systems background; familiar with systems engineering/integration principles and standards; familiar with London Underground SE/SI standards; experience of London Underground projects and working within multi-disciplinary project teams. This is a full-time, permanent position in Croydon, possibly working full-time initially in a project office in central London.
7 – RAILWAY SYSTEMS ENGINEER
